Personalized Discovery

Ask the questions that uncover real business pain.

Discovery is the most undervalued skill in sales. Most sellers treat it as a checklist of qualifying questions. The best treat it as a guided diagnosis — the moment where the buyer is doing the talking and you're doing the listening, the thinking, and the connecting of dots.

Done well, discovery is also when the buyer first feels understood. That feeling is what turns a meeting into a relationship.

Get below the waterline

Buyers usually open with the symptom — 'our pipeline is leaky', 'our reporting is slow', 'we need a better tool'. Those are the ten percent above the waterline.

The real driver — what actually unlocks budget and urgency — sits below: a missed quarter, a board commitment, a new exec, a competitor moving in. Your job is to ask the questions that surface it without making the buyer feel interrogated.

A simple discovery loop

Use this loop on any topic the buyer raises. Repeat until you can describe their situation in their own words.

  • 1
    Ask an open question

Start with how, what, or tell me about. Avoid yes/no questions — they collect data, not insight.

  • 2
Listen to the second half of the answer

The first half is the rehearsed line. The second half is where the real story lives.

  • 3
Ask 'what does that cost you?'

Quantify the pain in the buyer's language — time, money, headcount, risk, missed opportunity.

  • 4
    Reflect, then go deeper

Repeat back what you heard in one sentence. If they nod, you've earned the right to ask the next question.
